Preference Doctrine - The Doctrine of What You Prefer

Preferential learning has helped millions of people around the world gain insights about themselves, and how they interact with others. The insights provide a basis for developing how they communicate, learn and work. It provides a powerful framework to build better relationships, drive positive change, benefit innovation and achieve quality.

Type indicators make Carl Jung's theory of psychological types both understandable and very practical. One measures people's consciousness for their own preferences. Preference, in this context, means what a person prefers when that person can choose freely.

The indicator measures preferences along four “main lines” (dimensions) in the personality with 8 preferences distributed across the 4 dimensions. From the 8 different preferences, type understanding for each person shows a combination of 4 preferences—the one that the person prefers on each dimension. In total, 16 different types emerge, each of which has its own unique characteristics, strengths and potential pitfalls.

The preference indicator is not a test...

This powerful tool is often mistakenly referred to as the Type test or the personality test. The preference indicator is not a test, but an expression of how conscious we are of what we prefer.

Type Indicator is a non-evaluative psychological tool. That is, the indicator says something about how people can be different, without this sorting into “good” or “less good”. The indicator is based on the Swiss psychologist C.G. Jung's teachings on psychological types.

Type understanding is easy to use and easy to understand. It makes it possible to say something about what is typical of a person, i.e. what falls naturally for the person to do (the person's preference) in a given situation, without the person necessarily having to act the same all the time.

Type understanding is useful in many contexts. It can help us understand the similarities and differences between ourselves and other people, why we prefer some tasks and ways of working over others, why we quickly “find the tone” with some people, while we may perceive others as more difficult to communicate with.

Type understanding is valuable at, among other things:

  • Career Development and Career Counseling
  • Team Development/Department/Corporate Development
  • Leadership Development
  • Sales/Service Training
  • Workplace environment development
  • Conflict management
  • Competency development/personal development
  • Choice of profession

Some limitations of the model:

  • No system can but imply similarities and differences between people.Type Indicator is also no exception
  • Says as little about each person's unique personality as any other system
  • All adult people use more or less all preferences.
  • Nevertheless, these limitations do not deprive the practical usefulness of the type indicator

Jung's intention:

  • Don't just classify people into groups
  • More to examine the difficult topic of” personality” in a methodical way.
  • Typology is primarily a critical tool for the user who needs “unambiguous” angles and guidelines.
  • Type Indicator is, in a sense, a “psychological compass”.

Jung warned against:

  • “Even in medical circles, the opinion has spread that my therapy technique consists of pushing clients into the system, and then giving them the corresponding good advice.
  • Jung said, “My typology is more of a means of sorting through an overwhelming amount of psychological material, and not a method of putting labels on people.”
